10 days until Mardi Gras in NOLA!

SAG ya’ later…

Yup…you guessed it.

Here is another installment of fashion analysis by Danae.

As you may or may not have know, the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards were this past Sunday and I watched them while I put together my poster board (See last blog post). I am just going show some of my favorites, honorable mentions, as well as those I didn’t like that much.

Jennifer Lawrence

This girl has awful luck with award shows. Both at the Golden Globes and the SAG awards, she was sick or getting over being sick. Plus, while accepting an award, the underlayer of her dress “ripped” and she was left in the sheer lining underneath. I though she looked beautiful though. Although I liked her at the Golden Globes, I am loving this dress a tad bit more. The blue dress really brings out her blue eyes.

Katrina Bowden

Don’t know what it is about it, but this dress caught my eye. I want it for myself! 30 Rock star Katrina Bowden looks fierece in this metallic  fit n’ flare gown. I love the shimmery and the flowy bottom. Very classic!

Giuliana Rancic

I love this girl. She is super cute and 99% of the time has great taste fashion. I thought she looked very pretty in her one-shoulder ruffled gown. Even though she was more there to interview the celebs on the red carpet, she worked it out as well.

Jessica Chastain

If you read my post regarding her style at the Golden Globes, you will know that I wasn’t quite feeling it. However, this time around, I think she nailed it. Even though she has red hair, I think the red dress fits her wonderfully. At can we talk about that necklace? 1.25 million dollar Harry Winston necklace!! I love diamonds just as much as the next girl, but even I wouldn’t trust myself with something that costs as much as a celebrity home.

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen

Amanda Seyfried

This has to be one of my favorite dresses I saw on the red carpet. The “straight of the runway” dress is super fab, especially with the big ruffles at the bottom. It looked heavy though. Not quite sure how I feel about her dressing it down with the pendent. I would have done like a tiered diamond necklace or diamond pendent. And while the dress was picture perfect, Amanda seemed a little, odd. When I watched her do an interview with Giuliana Rancic, she sounded high or something…I wonder what was up?

Amanda Seyfried in Zac Posen

Sofia Vergara

AKA My Spirit Animal. I have a girl crush on Sofia. I love her and I love her style. She definitely has a look, especially when it comes to award show fashion. I love her in this tight yet flowy white dress. Paired with a pair of diamond earrings and loose waves, I think she looks like a Latina superstar. I’m torn on her shoes though…not quite sure if I like ’em or hate ’em.

Nina Dobrev

I don’t know too much about this girl, probably because I don’t watch The Vampire Diaries, but I am loving this hot pink dress. And, girl, she is working it. She looks very sleek and slender in this number and I like the subtle sexiness with the slits around the waist.

Honorable Mentions: Amy Poehler, Helen Hunt, Jaimie Alexander,  Julie Bowen, Justin Timberlake, Jim Parsons, Viola Davis & Jennifer Garner.

Fashion Flops:

January Jones

Maybe its her hair, maybe its the dress. Whatever it is, I was not loving what Jones was dishing out. She did take a risk, however I think it is more of a fail.

Jayma Mays

I thought I liked this dress, but the more I look at it, I don’t really like it that much. Jayma Mays is so cute and she usually wears good stuff to award shows, but didn’t quite hit the nail on the head this time. I think the dress is cute, it just does not look amazing on her figure. It makes her look kind of boxy in the waist.

Overall, pretty good fashion at the SAG Awards. I am excited to see what celebs wear to the Oscars. While red was the color to wear at the Golden Globes, blue was the color to where at the SAG Awards. Lots of pretty cobalt and navy blue dresses.

Just another kick in the kidneys..

Wow!! I have been meaning to write this post since last Thursday, but I am just NOW getting the time to write it out. I have been keeping a list of things to write. I’ll be honest, it is a long list. But I will get through it as briefly and less boringly as possible.

This last Tuesday I started at Fresenius Medical Care Dialysis Center. I did not think I was going to hate dialysis (apart from the blood. I knew I was going to hate that), but I did not think I was going to like it has much as I do. Yes, Renal is very complex, but I love the RD that I am with and I love that she is always doing different things. She never does the same thing everyday. Because these patient are hooked up to machines 3 days a week for 4 hours a time, the RD needs to be creative with education and information. You can not just do handouts all the time. That gets annoying…and who needs all that paper!

I have been doing several things this week. The first thing is working on an event called Protein Day! High protein is important for those on dialysis. We encourage our patients to use the Isolate Whey Protein Powder to help increase protein intake. We made the patients different items that they can make with the protein power. We made two protein shakes: 1 with Almond Milk and the protein powder, and another one with raspberry sherbet, sugar-free Sprite and protein powder. We also made “ice cream sandwiches” which is Cool Whip mixed with protein powder, smushed between two graham crackers. The patients really enjoy these! I also put together goodie bags which include a scoopful of the protein powder, a high protein cookie, a Zone bar and a recipe card with three recipes. We executed our protein day today for the MWF patients, and on Thursday we will do it again for our TRS patients.

My second project has been putting together bulletin boards. I made a bulletin board related to a contest that is going on at the dialysis center, a bulletin board about heart disease and dialysis for a dialysis center in Columbia and a bulletin discussing New Years Resolutions for patients and employees.

Bulletin Board about Heart Disease

Bulletin Board about Heart Disease

My last project, which was my main 4 day project was a “Shop Smart” bulletin board for education patients on foods that they CAN have while being on a renal diet/dialysis. I spent 4-5 hours walking around Wal-Mart looking at food labels and finding new food ideas for patients. Then I put together a tri-fold post organized into different areas of the grocery store. I also looked at prices and levels of phosphorus, sodium and potassium. It was quite the event, but I was really pleased with how the poster turned out…and so was my preceptor.

Whew…

Today I worked on putting together monthly educational materials and recipes for the next year.

12 days until Mardi Gras in NOLA!

P.S. With 3 months and 19 days left of this internship (but I am not counting…), I am definitely looking forward to going back home. I saw this video the other day and it really made me miss the Chi.

I am not wishing away my internship, but I will be excited when I can graduate from this program and start working!

I ‘mustache’ you a question. Or shall I ‘shave’ it for later?

A lot of things happened this past week. The city of Monroe practically shut down due to “inclement weather“. University of Louisiana-Monroe closed for 2 days and Louisiana Tech closed down for 1 day. They were expected this huge ice storm, but all it did was rain.

My car’s engine light came on, so I had the wonderful joy of fitting taking my car into the Toyota dealer to have it operated on. Luckily, they had a courtesy car drive me and pick me up from work.

I have finally completed my last clinical rotation. On Wednesday I presented my clinical case study on Acute Myeloid Leukemia. AML is a type of leukemia that is fairly severe and is caused by a mutation in the white blood cells and develops mainly in the bone marrow. On Thursday I finished up my last day of my 2 week floor supervision. And Thursday was probably the easiest, funnest day I have had at St. Francis. In total, I got a total of 3 patients that I had to see. 2 of them had to be educated and one was just a follow up. The first education was easy, the follow up was easy, and the other patient I had to educate was at the in-hospital dialysis center. Around 11:15 am,  the three younger dietitians  Hannah, Jessica and Sarah took me out for my intern lunch. We went to Raw Sushi in Monroe. For 4 girls, we had hella food at the table. We each ordered an entree and a roll of sushi. Then we decided to get Orange Leaf, which is a popular (especially among the Monroe dietitians) frozen yogurt shop. I really enjoyed hanging out with the girls, laughing, talking wedding planning (Sarah just got engaged and is planning her August wedding), jamming in the car to the XM radio and embracing our young-ness! We took WAY longer than our allotted time for lunch. We didn’t get back to the office until 12:45 pm. WHOOPS! I tried one last time to educated my dialysis patient, but he was still gone. Then the dietitians went over my final evaluation with me. I got mostly fours (which is the best you can get)! And then I went home around 1:30 pm. Easiest day of work ever!

Friday we had class in Ruston. Good to see everyone since I haven’t seen them since we got back from Thanksgiving. Everyone loved my new haircut and thought I looked older. I appreciated the positive feedback! We had a short presentation on NG Tube placement by a nursing professor at Tech. The NG tube goes through the persons nose and exits into the stomach. It can be used to decompress the stomach, suction the stomach or short-term nutritional feedings.  This was our assistant…

He looks a little TOO happy to be getting an NG Tube.

He looks a little TOO happy to be getting an NG Tube.

After Ruston, our fellow intern and Alexandria resident, Chrystal came to stay at our humble abode in Monroe. Chrystal went to a Mardi Gras ball on Saturday and was looking for a dress. Kelly, Chrystal and I decided to make a fun time of it. We grabbed Starbucks, went to three dress shops in Monroe, went to Sam’s Club because Kelly’s car had a deflated tire, went to the mall and tried on Mardi Gras masks and did other shennanigans (like get mustaches..)

I mustache you, do Chrystal and I look good??

I mustache you, do Chrystal and I look good??

After the mall, Jon met the three of us at Olive Garden for wine samples and dinner!! Then we went back to the apartment, cracked open a bottle of wine and watched the movie “The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia“. This family makes Honey Boo Boo‘s family look normal. Kelly and Chrystal had already seen it, so I was the only newbie. We decided to make it into a drinking game…it’s that bad. If you have Netflix, hop on there and watch it…They are as redneck as redneck gets.

In the morning, I went to my cardio kickboxing class and then watched Clueless as I did Chrystal’s hair for her Mardi Gras ball. Apparently I am know as the “Hair Master” around here, so Chrystal didn’t want anyone doing her hair but me. haha We did an Audrey Hepburn inspired hairstyle. I have to say…I did a pretty good job. I am sure Chrystal rocked he do at the ball that night.

The rest of the night was pretty laid back. I have tomorrow off due to MLK Jr. Day, but I start at the Dialysis Center on Tuesday. Looking forward to a different atmosphere.

Hope everybody is doing well. Hang in there….January is almost over!!

Less than 4 months until my internship is complete!

XOXO, Danae

20 days until Mardi Gras in NOLA!

I’d like to thank the Academy!

Aside from nutrition, health, coffee and puppies, I also love fashion. Growing up I wanted to be a fashion stylist. As of right now, I am glad I chose dietetics, but I still enjoy dressing up and fashion. And no fashionista loves anything more than AWARD SEASON!!!! Yesterday was the Golden Globes and you bet I was sitting on the couch at 4 pm watching the pre-show to the pre-show, the red carpet fashion and of course the actual show with hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who did an awesome job! Those two are like two peas in a pod.

I love watching all the ladies, and gents, walking in on the red carpet and seeing what they are wearing. Rather than listing ALL of my favorites, I decided to give my opinion on the 5 must-see people on the red carpet, according to E! Let’s start with number 5 and work our way to number 1.

————————————————————————————————————————————–

5) Anne Hathaway

If you haven’t seen Les Miserables yet, get your butt away from your computer and go see it!! It is one of my favorite musicals, and Anne Hathaway did a great job. And who knew she could sing like THAT?! She really dedicated herself her her role of a dying prostitute  She has really come a long way since The Princess Diaries.  I can’t say that I am in love with her short hair. I am iffy when it came to her outfit. I would have liked it if it was a more continuous piece. She still looks thin though.

4) Claire Danes

I think the first time I saw Claire Danes was in Romeo + Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio. Claire always has great presence and I think very poised. She looks good in very simple designs and she proved me right again! She looks very beautiful in a red strapless by Versace. And can I say she looks great for having a baby a month ago!! You go girl!

3) Jessica Chastain

I do not know much about Jessica Chastain, except she was in The Help. I loved her dress from the Academy Awards last year. This year, I am not quite feeling her outfit. I think she has gorgeous red hair, but how she had it styled in a way that did not suit her. And with her dress, the color was fun, but the fitting of it did not flatter her. She had old lady boobs and there was a seam that went right down the middle of the dress.

2) Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

Can I just say I am glad Ben got rid of Lopez for Garner?! I love that this couple still looks so in love and they have three beautiful children that they actually spend time with. They are one of Hollywood’s golden couples. Everyone was buzzing about what they would be wearing. Let’s start with Ben of Bennifer 2.0. Looking sharp in a suit and bow tie, but not digging the face fur. Maybe since it was chilly that day, he kept it to stay warm. And a navy suit with a black tie?! Uh, did you get dressed in the dark? And Jen looked very demure but glamorous like usual. I am glad she let her hubby have the spotlight, since he was the one up for the G.G.

1) Jennifer Lawrence

This Hollywood newcomer has blown up the fashion world and film world. Her career has really taken off since The Hunger Games. She is someone to watch! She showed up wearing a “homecoming-y” red dress by Dior Haute Couture and accessorized with a black thin belt and diamond earrings. I loved the color of her dress, but she had pointy boobs. Other than that, I thought she looked very pretty.

And some my personal faves included: Isla Fisher, Tina Fey (red carpet dress), Katherine McPhee, Julianne Hough, Nicole Richie (but why were you at the Golden Globes?), Emily Blunt, Jessica Alba, Francesca Eastwood, Eva Longoria (and her Angeline Jolie wanna-be leg), Sofia Vergara (my latina twin), Gossip Girl AKA Kristen Bell & Amanda Seyfried.

Red was definitely the color to wear at the 2013 Golden Globes!

Did you watch the Golden Globes?? What did you think of the styles this year?

XOXO, Danae

Does Someone Need a Hug??

Well, I have just finished my first week of floor supervision at St. Francis. I am so glad to be on my own. Don’t get me wrong, I like the dietitians that I work with, but I was ready to get into my own groove and not work with people over my shoulder. But they still have to sign of on my chart notes, but that I can handle. Just can’t wait until I get to be the one in charge, writing notes like no body’s business.

The hospital has been fairly busy, what with the huge flu/influenza A breakout. There are so many patients that are under precautions. I have to either where glove, a gown and gloves, a gown and face mask, or all of the above. In addition to the flu theme, this week’s theme is old people. You got it…old people.

I love old people. They have so much to tell and enjoy it when you stop and say hello. I had several patients that were over the age of 70 this week. Many of them were very friendly. I had this one old man who was so cute, I just wanted to hug him. He was just crackin’ jokes left and right. But I went from someone like him to this 97 year old woman who is essentially dying. She just lays in this bed all by herself. Her breathing is labored, she can barely talk and can’t hold her head up without shaking. It just breaks my heart. I know I can’t cure any of their diseases, but I try to be pleasant with them and make sure they have a great day.

I also had some other things going on during the week. I was asked to give a talk on healthy eating to the Pilot Club of the Twin Cities, a service oriented club that is run by women. They are most known for organizing the Taste of the Twin Cities and the Fleur de Lis, Miss Heart of Pilot and Miss Taste of the Twin Cities pageants. I talked to the 20 women about the importance of healthy eating and what to look for at the grocery store. I don’t mind public speaking, but it is when I can’t read the crowd that I get nervous. I even tried making a few jokes. They laughed, but they all looked so serious, I couldn’t tell if they liked me. But after my talk, they did give me a little gift, so it was much appreciated. It was good experience. After my talk, I stayed for the meeting. It was interesting to hear what they were planning, but when you get 20 southern women in a room, GIRLLLLL, they never stay on topic  everyone is talking over each other and they are loud. I am a woman, and I was starting to go crazy listening to everyone…

Last, on Saturday I drove over to Ruston to help with a grant project called Youth4Health, in hopes to correct childhood obesity and get families to eat more meals together. We had families come in to get weight, measured and nutritionally interviewed. I was in charge of measuring their height and then helped the younger kids fill out surveys, they were way to extensive for them in my option. Information covered included attitudes toward food, their self,  eating habits and environments and family medical history and family social issues. We also did a 24-hour recall with all the kids. I really loved working with the kids. I was amazed by how open the kids were with me. Some questions talked about how they felt their parents felt about them and how they feel about themselves and how others treat them.

So ready for this next week to be done and completed. All I have left is my final case study presentation and my final evaluation, then 3 day weekend (Thx MLK, Jr.)!! So ready.

XOXO, Danae

P.S. On Thursday, it will be 4 months until I am done with my internship! It will go by so fast!

Friday Favorites: It’s a CHRISTMAS HAUL!!!!

I know Christmas was a while ago, but thought I would do a Christmas Haul for another installment of Friday Favorites!

Hauls are done when you have gone on a huge shopping spree and what to show what you bought!! They are pretty popular on YouTube.

I won’t go over everything that I got, but I will show you some of my faves!!

1. Leopard Print Coat from my “D” grandparents. A little ridiculous for Louisiana, but I loved being able to wear it while it was cold in Chicago. Below is a picture of myself and Anna, Greg’s sister, wearing our leopard print coats. (Yes, we did go out in public wearing those)

2. Necklace with Black and White Diamonds from Greg. When Greg and I first met, he gave me a crown necklace. This Christmas, he upgraded me to this beautiful necklace! I love it. But just because I am not wearing the crown, doesn’t mean I am not still a princess.

3. Plush Simply Vera Pajama Set from Mom. My mom has a pair of these and I loved them. I was so surprised when she bought me a matching pair! They keep me warm and stylish!

4. “Thank God for Girlfriends” (and Shoes) Travel Mug from Anna (Greg’s sister). Anna and I have become really close friends over the years. We share a love for coffee and shoes, so this mug encompasses our relationship. I love it!

5. Zebra Dress from the “D” Grandparents. I think you get the idea that I love animal print, especially leopard/cheetah and zebra. This dress is so sexy on. And it is a sweater-like material, so it can keep me warm. Plus, it looks rocker with the    leather jacket pictured below.

6. Sparkly Tweed Blazer & Faux Leather Jacket from “D” Grandparents. Blazers are awesome, and with all the presentations I do and how often I need to dress professionally, they always come in handy. I have the shimmery blazer for parties or fancy occasions, and I have the leather jacket in case I ever decide to join a motorcycle gang. 🙂

7. Cream Infinity Scarf & Leopard Print Scarf from my sister and Greg’s mom, respectively. What?! More leopard print? who would have thunk it! I guess I’m a little bit predictable. I love both of these scarfs. Probably one of my favorite type of accessories.

8. Crown Royal T-Shirt from my brother. My brother has become quite the Goodwill shopper. So when it came to getting his family gifts, there was no other store he wanted to go to. As each of us (mom, dad, Paige and myself) opened our t-shirts, he gave us this elaborate story on how he picked which shirt to give us. I got this one because I went to a no-alcohol school, the colors on the shirt are my college colors, I am a princess and I like booze. haha I had a good time listening to all his stories.

9. Workout Gear from my mom and dad. I don’t mind going to the gym in “ugly” clothes, but, there is nothing wrong with being cute and coordinated while gettin’ your fitness on! I love this new outfit I can wear to Zumba or kickboxing. My favorite is the jacket…it is bright and it has thumbholes

10. LA Tech Half-zip Hoodie from “Z” Grandparents. Almost 6 months in and I still never had a piece of LA Tech apparel. I asked for the half zip hoodie for Christmas. It is very cozy and warm, and will be nice when I have to wear scrubs to work.

11. Cream fit-and-flare lace tank from my sister. In addition to the scarf, my sister also got me this cute lace tank! Perfect for wearing with jeans or under a blazer! She is so thoughtful.

12. Hand-knit grey gloves from my cousin/aunt. My cousin Austin drew my name for Christmas. In addition to a Starbucks giftcard and Target giftcard, my Aunt knitted me these grey fingerless gloves! She is the wizard of knitting, so I was excited to get this handmade gift.

P.S. After New Years, I cut my hair off!! I needed a change, and isn’t that what a New Year for?

6 Months of Blogging!

Wow! Six months have gone by since I wrote my first blog post about my Louisiana experience! Which also means I have been in LA for 6 months (6 months as of last Saturday) , which is craziness. If someone would have told me a year ago I would be completing an internship in Louisiana, I would have told them they were nuts. I have come so far since I first moved down here. I have been completely blessed with the opportunity to work at so many different facilities, work with passionate and intelligent dietitians as well as make some new friends that I will be able to enjoy for the rest of my lifetime. I can not wait until I can finally become a full-fledged dietitian, although I do not want to rush my internship away.

Just wanted to reflect on this half of a year anniversary of mine! I am home from Christmas now and its back to St. Francis to start my floor supervision, which is where I am given select patients from all the floors and am in charge of them. Pretty excited to be on my own. Wish me luck!

Airlines: Screwing People Over Since Forever

Oh the woes of traveling by flight…

When it comes to flying home, I have been 9 for 9 (6 flights over Thanksgiving, 2 for traveling home for Christmas and 1 for working my way back to LA). I was almost 10 for 10, but United Airlines didn’t feel like giving me 100%.

I flew from Chicago to Houston with ease. When I got off the plane, I made sure that the flight to Monroe was on time…and it was. By the time I walked to the gate, the flight had been cancelled!! How can a plane break down in under 6 minutes??!!!

Credit to: CartoonStock

Credit to: CartoonStock

After talking with fellow flyers, arguing with the United ticket guy and calling my parents, it had come to the conclusion that the only way for me to get to Monroe the same day was to fly into Shreveport. The evening flight to Monroe was overbooked and the earliest they could get me into Monroe was 3 pm….THE NEXT DAY! Yeah…I am not using one of my three sick days because United Airlines can’t have a working plane.

The flight to Shreveport left at 3 pm, so I only had to wait in the Houston airport for 3 hours (Thank God for Starbucks and free WIFI). Thankfully, Jon (Kelly’s boyfriend, who was picking me up anyway at the Monroe Airport), graciously drove out to Shreveport to pick up stranded, little old me! We managed to make it home by 6 pm, giving me enough time to unpack, eat dinner, and enjoy what was left of my relaxing evening. I am just glad my luggage didn’t get lost.

I may be 9 for 10, flight-wise, but at least percentage-wise, I still get an A!

XOXO, Danae

Daily Post: Stroke of Midnight

When 2012 turned to 2013, I was with my best friends. I was with one of my best friends Jeanine. We have been friends since 6th grade (after being in the same Girl Scout troop), and we are still going strong.

Then I had three of my best guy friends: Greg, Ken and Brian. I do not have a lot of friends that are guys, but these boys are supportive of me and I know that they will always protect me and have my back. We were at a bar in Naperville called Black Finn. Three levels are dancing and drinks!! At midnight, I rang in the new year with friends that have always been there for me. There was no where else I would rather be…except for maybe the Bahamas…where it’s warm.

Hope everyone had a wonderful new year and I wish everyone happiness in 2013!

XOXO, Danae
